About Jazz in July

Jazz in July is the premier fundraising event for In Our Own Voices. Now in its fifth year, Jazz in July is an evening of live jazz music, a live auction and an awards ceremony to honor individuals within our community who are committed to making change.

Jazz in July is truly a wonderful evening, with an expected attendance of over 100 guests.

This year’s event will be held at Dale Miller Restaurant, in downtown Albany, New York. This elegant and sophisticated restaurant has received high marks from area reviewers, all of whom are impressed by its decor, the warmth of it’s staff, and of course, it’s fabulous food.

There will be a complimentary wine tasting and tapas to kick off the evening, followed by a live auction, which will benefit the Rising Star scholarship fund. The scholarship is awarded to a LGBT youth of color, age 18-24, who is actively pursuing a college education. The scholarship is designed to help offset the costs of tuition, books, and other school-related expenses. Last year, the Rising Star scholarship was split between two very deserving individuals, both of whom are studying at SUNY Albany.

The Awards Ceremony is a very special component of Jazz in July. It is In Our Own Voices’ way of recognizing members of our community who are dedicated to making that community a safer and more inclusive environment for LGBT POC. Honors include Volunteer of the Year, Political Advocacy, Business of the Year, and Community Leadership.

The evening will culminate in a live jazz performance by the renowned jazz musician Norman Connors. Connors has been playing and recording music since 1973, and is one of the most successful crossover jazz artists in music history. His most recent effort, “Star Power” focuses on his R&B roots, and includes collaborations with some of the most celebrated R&B performers.
Jazz in July will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2010 from 5:00 to 11:00 PM.
